The reason?

When Favre was released off of the reserve/retirement list by the New York Jets in April, the issue of being reinstated did not matter anymore.

“He’s a free agent,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told ProFootballTalk.com in an email response.

There have been many rumors that Favre and the Vikings already have a contract in place and are waiting to break it to the media. This gives that rumor a little more steam.
