A playoff system would "terminate" rivalries in many senses of the word.  Let's examine this claim by looking at one of the more known rivalries in college football.

Ohio State and Michigan have been playing each other in November for the last 100 years.  For many of those years, there was a Rose Bowl berth on the line.  That is the main reason the rivalry became so heated.
