Gamecocks’ Bryce Sherman Quits Football: How Does This Affect the Team?

Article By on 9th July, 2011

News out of Columbia today is that Bryce Sherman will not be returning to the football team.

The former 5’4″, 157-pound USC track athlete known as ‘Sherm the Worm,’ joined the football team in 2009 after being kicked off of the track team.

A rising junior, Sherman switched from Tailback to Wide Receiver during spring practice. Sherman was a two-sport star out of Carver High School in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

According to Gamecock Central, South Carolina’s Rivals website;

A source close to the team confirmed the news to Gamecock Central.com on Saturday afternoon. The source said that Sherman had decided to quit, although receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. Sherman’s position coach, told Gamecock Central.com that if the decision had been made, Sherman had yet to inform the coaching staff.

Sherman was listed third on the depth chart at the Wide Receiver position, behind Senior Jason Barnes and Sophomore Ace Sanders.

A fan favorite, Bryce Sherman had the tools to be a kick returner and slot receiver/ tailback. In 2009, Sherman burst out onto the scene with 24 kick returns for 507 yards and 9 rushing attempts for 57 yards.

In 2010, Sherman’s main duty was returning kicks. He ran 35 returns for a total of 713 yards. In 2011, Sherman would have had potential competition against highly touted recruit Dameire Byrd and two-sport star Bruce Ellington; who played on USC’s basketball team last season.

When reached by the phone, Sherman said “I don’t want to say nothing right now.”

In conclusion, Sherman’s decision hurt the Gamecocks in the special teams department. ‘Sherm the Worm’ was a fan favorite and will be deeply missed by South Carolina.

Expect Bruce Ellington to grab Sherman’s spot.
