The high hopes were largely a result of the team bringing in an “offensive genius” in new offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who was supposed to help the offense make drastic improvements and help turn quarterback Alex Smith into the player the 49ers expected he would become when they drafted him first overall in the 2005 NFL draft.
