Smith, 23, was used primarily on special teams. He has the ability to play corner and safety, and was thought to be a possible contributor this year.
Smith joined the Lions late into the 2009 season, after spending the first six weeks on the Chicago Bears practice squad. The Lions had just re-signed him to a RFA (restricted free agent) tender last month.
