Starting safety Charles Godfrey is out with a broken hand, meaning three defensive starters have succumbed to injury since the start of training camp.
First it was Maake Kemoeatu, who tore his achilles during a running drill on the first day of camp.
Now, after the second preseason game, the Panthers are also down a Pro Bowl linebacker in Jon Beason, in addition to Godfrey.
Godfrey started as a rookie last year for Carolina, logging 61 tackles to go along with an interception, a forced fumble, a sack, and five pass deflections.
Godfrey had surgery on the hand on Monday.
