They cheated. To get all of the high profile recruits, they went through special efforts to get special players. Even some former SC players have been proven guilty of taking illegal substances. 

Let's start off with the most obvious story: Reggie Bush. I am not saying that USC is a bad school, because it is a very great school, but Reggie could have gone elsewhere and could have done very well.
